Interviewing Ms. Ishbel's Gardeners

Interviewing Ms. Ishbel’s Gardeners

Today we went to Ms Ishbel’s class and interviewed her KG students about how they planted the plants. I saw that they were really knowledgeable of telling what they did when they are making the bottle garden. I learnt that first we need put the dirt in the plastic water bottle and then water it. She said the sun will help it to grow. She also said the challenges were when they put the dirt it was really heavy for them. She said the easiest thing was to water it. I learnt that we can only water it in the morning or at night, and you can’t water it in the middle of the day because it would get too much hot.

Interview with Ms Ishbel's Gardeners

Interview with Ms. Ishbel’s Gardeners

We interviewed ms Ishbel's gardeners to learn about how to take care and plant the plants because they have a bottle garden.  So we went to their classroom and went in partners and I interviewed my partner about: What made you do it? What did you planted? What can you teach us about planting? What was hard for you? What was easy for you? What was fun? and Who watered those plants?

I learnt that they planted fast growing flowers so it take less time.
I learnt that they water the plants in the morning and evening because if you water it in the afternoon it will burn or dry out because it is too hot.
I learnt that we need to mix compost and dirt together.
I learnt that you need to put holes in the bottle because if not the plant will get soggy.

Interview with Ms. Ishbel’s class.

This afternoon we went to Ms. Ishbel’s class to Interview them about their planting. The questions we asked were what made you do it, what did you plant, what did you put it in, what can you teach us about planting crops and why did you do it.

The answers that they told us was for the first questions what made you do that the answer  was to be green and recycle. The answer for what did you plant was flowers and strawberries. The answer for what did you put it in was a plastic bottle. The answer to what can you teach us about planting crops was to water it every morning and evening.

The answer to why did you do it because their unit is about going green.

Interviewing with ms.Ishbel’s gardener

I learn that if you plant in a bottle you need to make lots of hole because if you don’t make a hole the water is not going to stay there and never get out.You need a compost to plant it and if you just put soil and the seed in it the seed won’t grow. The best time to water it is in the morning and evening and also I asked them question such as:

What made you do it?

What did you plant?

What have you learn about planting?

What did you use to plant it?

What did you do first?

The questions we asked were What inspired them, what they planted, what they could tell us about planting and what were the hard or easy things about it. I learnt that a good way to plant is mix dirt with compost. Because if you only put compost it will be too wet.

For my partner Olivia there was no challenges, but for other people it was watering it. The opportunities were after some days the flowers opened and 2 people had 1 plant and they took turns  watering. the last thing was that they had fun.

Wheat Production Role Play

We played a whole class role play about Wheat Production.
To get the students to understand several of the concepts of the unit we put together a role play so that they could experience the following:

  • How food gets from farm to table
  • The process of food production
  • The challenges and opportunities the farmers, mill workers, factory employees, transport works and shop keepers face in the production of bread.
  • What can you do if you do not have enough money to pay for transport of your product or the next group in the process cannot pay you?
  • How can we make it fair for all workers?
  • The choices people have to make when making food.
  • As a group how to effectively manage your money.

The students were divided into groups  Each group had to make a product - seeds into wheat- wheat into bags of flour- bags of flour into bread at the factory and then finally bread sold in the shop. At each station there were transport costs. They were all interconnected and needed each other to make it work.

Teams could loan money from the bank, but this had to be paid back. The teams had to record their expenditure and profit.

Each item had a cost that needed to be paid.

The role play raised many issues for the students and in discussions at the end they shared their frustrations at the challenges they faced and what they saw as the opportunities. It gave them the opportunity to experience the costs involved in food production and distribution. They also had to pay using dollars and experienced having to make choices when the dollars were running out!

Purple Day

On Friday 6th March the ISPP Reps organised a Purple Day. Everyone dressed up in shades of purple. We wrote in class purple poems, sang purple songs and watched famous purple characters on video.  It was great fun!
Below are some photographs of us on the day and some of our poetry.

Purple poems in a purple world
With purple people and purple facts
Sad Flowers with purple petals with purple pollen in the middle
With bees buzzing and flowers sprouting
Purple hair everywhere

Fruits that are purple gazing in the light
Sparkling in the sun
People sick as dogs
As sad as a hedge hog
When the sad purple sky flies by.

Hunger Lunch by Seo Young

Reflection on the hunger lunch

I was first very angry to be one of the people in the Red group because I saw what I was going to eat. Also, I was very jealous of the Blue group, which Signe and Shauqi was in. I was ashamed of myself because I stole some food from the blue group, and I learnt that I needed to think and control myself before I do something. I don’t know why I was so sad, because I  only got that for one morning, and some people in Cambodia has that everyday. Why we did the hunger lunch was because we needed to know what it feels like to be a rich, or poor person.

Hunger lunch

I feel sad because we have to sit on the ground and eat only rice with nothing and I also feel jealous because the other two team are rich and I’m poor.

I learn that not having enough money to use every is sad because if you don’t have enough you can’t buy any rice and have to work at the farm every day.If you want to get water you have to walk along time and you can only get it a little bit at a time. The red team is poor, white is a little bit rich and blue is very rich.

We did it because it show some people are poor so they don’t have enough food to eat and some people are rich so they have lot of thing to eat.

Hunger lunch reflection
I felt unfair and happy.  I felt happy because I got the healthy food and  I felt unfair because the blue team got the yummy food. I learnt that we should be happy with what we get because in the world there are some people who do not have any money and we got healthy food but the blue team got junk food which is not healthy for our body. I felt sad for the red team because they got plain rice and it was dry and they did not have any meat or any proteins.  I learnt that it is hard to survive for the red. The blue team was the rich  team, the white team was the ok team and the red team was the very very poor team so the red team had to go far to go and get there water bottle. At the end of the Hunger lunch the blue and white team got to play but the red team had to tidy up so I felt sad. We did it because it is connecting to our new unit.

Hunger Lunch
I got rice for my group and my group is red when we want to drink water we need to was to drink water.
I felt angry because the red group was cleaning up and some people was showing off that the red group need to clean up.
I learned that people was jealous, mad and people was saying I hate you to each other.
I learned that people was stealing food and they did not ask for some food that they like.
I felt sad for the red group because they need to eat on the ground.
I was shocked that they was playing with foods.
I think Ms.CLaire,Ms.lisa and Ms.Teresa didthat because she want to know our feeling what will we do.
The blue group is high income.
The white group is medium income and the red income is poor.

Hunger Lunch

In the hunger lunch i felt angry and sad and happy  i felt sad because people  took thing from our table In the hunger lunch i felt angry and sad and happy  i felt sad because people  took thing from our table and i was very angry and the poor people had rice and a lot of them wasted it. I learnt that many people are poor and some of them can only eat rice once a day and some of the people were offering healthy food for the poor people but they didn't want it. They only wanted the rich peoples food. I learnt that a lot of people need food the red team had rice the white team had fried rice the blue team had pizza and i think we did this because we showed what the people wanted to eat.
By Shauqi

Hunger lunch

I thought it was a party when i came in but then i got sad because we only got rice while they get chicken rice and the other team got cookies, crisp and pizza so I started to get jealous. When I asked them for some they said “no” so i just sat down chat with my friends.
I thought it was unfair because we had to sit on the floor and eat with my hands,

I learnt how life was like for poor people and how jealous they are of the food we eat.I learnt that most of the rich people eat junk food.
I learnt that people had to walk really far to get water and you only can get a little at once and how some people can’t even get food.

I wasn't happy because I am not used to sitting on the floor and eating only rice with nothing else and I am not used to eating with my hands.
I was only jealous because they get to sit on tables and eat with spoon and forks and they get to eat rice with something or pizza and other foods.
I thought it wasn't really a good idea because some people cried.

I thought the teachers did it so they know what it is like to be poor because all of us have money and we don’t know what it is like to be poor.

The red team had to sit on the floor and eat rice only.(unlucky)(i was red team)
The white had rice with chicken with spoons and chairs and tables.(medium)

The blue team had pizza, crisp,Oreos and juices. (lucky)

Hunger lunch
I felt sad for the red group because they only had rice but my group had rice with chicken with our water bottles with a banana. Also,I saw a lot of people go to the blue table because they wanted the junk food because it was delicious and they didn’t want to come to our table because they wanted the yummy food. I learned that a lot of wealthy people buyed junk food like the blue table because the blue table had junk food like the wealthy people. Also there are a lot of junk food and fast food restaurants so a lot of people go to the junk food and fast food restaurants because the restaurants have food that tastes good but those food are not healthy to our body.
I was shocked because some of the friends that were in the red group said to the blue group bad words like I hate you, you’re not my friend, and you’re showing off.
We did the hunger lunch because because the teachers wanted us to feel how it feels to be poor,a little wealthy and how it feels to be wealthy or rich. A lot of people thought that the hunger lunch was real, but it was just a play to explain how it feels to be poor or wealthy. The blue people were rich, the white were a little wealthy, and the red people were meant to be the poor people.

Hunger lunch reflection

Hunger lunch
In the hunger lunch I was in the red so I was poor. I felt sad for my team because we were poor and sad. Many people also felt sad and mad, people stole food from the blue team and the blue team was rich. I learnt that the roleplay had junk food and healthy foods so we need to share and eat healthy foods. The red team had to walk to get their water bottles. My group had only rice. Many people also were sad because some people stole from the blue team. I also saw a friend gave me a banana then I put the banana back to the blue team I did it because I wasn’t hungry.

My reflection on Hunger Lunch

My reflection on Hunger Lunch

Today we did something called hunger lunch, what we did was picked a color out of a bag. The colors were red, blue and white. I was a red, the reds had to eat on the floor, with their hands and the only thing we ate was plain rice! The white group was on a table and eating with forks, they ate fried rice and a banana. The blue group had junk food, a candle and a table cloth.

I thought it was unfair and I got jealous. And while I was in the well they were stealing food from the blue table when ms. Claire said to share but I didn’t know any thing so I took some. And my group had to walk all the way to the lunch area that we called the well just to get water.

I think Ms. Claire did that to show us that some people don’t have enough to eat, and also there was a lot of people in the red group and 6 people in the blue group and I think She wanted to show us how many people  don’t have enough food.

Estela

Hunger lunch

Hunger lunch
blue team:rich white team:middle red team:poor

I felt sad for the blue team because all the reds took all the food from there table .
when all the reds ran to get the food I felt scared of what was happening and sad for the blue team.
I learnt how sad it was like when you don't have money and your poor.
I also learnt that the poor wants money from the rich so they can buy junk food like the rich.
I was surprised about the responses from the blue team.

I think we did the hunger lunch to show how people felt when they were poor and rich.
