Today we had a guest speaker his name is Mr. Mariano he works for Unicef which is an orginization that helps marginalized people around the world. The three things that Mr. Mariano is focusing on in Unicef is Education, Sanataition, and Health.

What I learned

By watching the presentation I learned that in poor schools if they don't have toilets and so the marginalized poor people in the school pee outside in the bushes and every day the people in the schools pee and the water in the ground gets smelly and dirty so then they get dirty water.

Our little friends

This how we made it :
First we had a paper with a person at the bottom it had the source.
Next we had to make clothes for him we made them from cutting  scrap paper with it we could color it.
Then we glued it.
If the paper didn't fit then we colored the outside where it didn't fit.
Afterwards we colored the eyes and the skin.
After that we put cardboard behind it.
Finally your little friend is finished.

Oliver Twist

We are reading Oliver Twist By Charles Dickens in class
I think what is going to happen next in the Oliver Twist story is... I think that Fagin is teaching Oliver to steal and rob things and maybe he is going to ask him to go outside and steal things because he is teaching Oliver how to steal from the pocket.

Class reflection from January 21st
We discussed what we had learnt from our guest speaker and this is what we said...
Today our class learnt from Mr James from Friends International
He told us that:

  • We should not give money to children who beg on the streets but support groups/ organisations that work with marginalized children.
  • That drugs are not healthy for children and it is not easy to get rid of them when are addicted.
  • That we should not take photos of people without their permission.
  • That when people visit Cambodia they should not go to the orphanages and take photos, because children are not tourist attractions.
  • Friends International work with young people in trouble and their families, they talk to them and build a relationship
  • They ask people if they would like training, for a job
  • They help children catch up with their schooling.
  • They give the children and their families medicine if they are sick.
We found Mr James's presentation really interesting.

Tuning In
Role Play
Today in class we played a role play activity that shared with the students how people are discriminated against and how having an identity is important to us. We did this by having 3 different types of classrooms. A green one with a small number of students, the latest technology, lots of teacher help and guidance.
A blue one where the students were part of a class of 60 and that the work was not differentiated, no support too many students and no technology
An orange group who were marginalised students who did not have access to to the right of an education.
These are a few of the reflections.

Today I took a block from the bag. It gave me the colour orange. Then I was named orange.
I needed to sweep the outside floor with a sweepez, then I needed to carry my bag like a water bucket on my head around school, to go and get water. I realized my colour was a marginalized colour a disadvantaged colour.
I could not go to school. The green group had access to everything and they weren't disadvantaged. The blue group were a little disadvantaged.
I felt bad when Archie Green laughed at us. I felt unfair because they had access to everything and we were disadvantaged children.
I was a little jealous of the green group getting all those things and love and the orange group had no access to anything.
What I have learnt from this role play is that disadvantaged people can't go to school and they don't get many opportunities. They don't get much love from people.

Today I took a block from a bag. It gave me a colour. I was colour blue
The blue group had to work and do sheets that wasn't at our level. There was no bathroom for girls and no water. We had to keep working non stop. The teacher gave us something and we had to do it. You don't understand and you still have to do it, no one could help us.
I felt sad and jealous because  it was like we were in a workhouse. Because the teacher didn't care if it was the wrong level. I felt jealous because the rich school had electronic Ipads and they had everything, but we just had a little bit of care. I also felt guilty because of the disadvantaged orange people had no school and we had an education.
