Role Play
Today in class we played a role play activity that shared with the students how people are discriminated against and how having an identity is important to us. We did this by having 3 different types of classrooms. A green one with a small number of students, the latest technology, lots of teacher help and guidance.
A blue one where the students were part of a class of 60 and that the work was not differentiated, no support too many students and no technology
An orange group who were marginalised students who did not have access to to the right of an education.
These are a few of the reflections.
Today I took a block from the bag. It gave me the colour orange. Then I was named orange.
I needed to sweep the outside floor with a sweepez, then I needed to carry my bag like a water bucket on my head around school, to go and get water. I realized my colour was a marginalized colour a disadvantaged colour.
I could not go to school. The green group had access to everything and they weren't disadvantaged. The blue group were a little disadvantaged.
I felt bad when Archie Green laughed at us. I felt unfair because they had access to everything and we were disadvantaged children.
I was a little jealous of the green group getting all those things and love and the orange group had no access to anything.
What I have learnt from this role play is that disadvantaged people can't go to school and they don't get many opportunities. They don't get much love from people.

The blue group had to work and do sheets that wasn't at our level. There was no bathroom for girls and no water. We had to keep working non stop. The teacher gave us something and we had to do it. You don't understand and you still have to do it, no one could help us.
I felt sad and jealous because it was like we were in a workhouse. Because the teacher didn't care if it was the wrong level. I felt jealous because the rich school had electronic Ipads and they had everything, but we just had a little bit of care. I also felt guilty because of the disadvantaged orange people had no school and we had an education.

We liked the way you talked about your feelings. Are there other times when you have felt you have been treated differently from other people? Did you have the same feelings?
ReplyDeleteWhat is the most important right that kids can have -- what is number one for you?
ReplyDeleteMr Barry we discussed this and we found it difficult to pick just one right, they are all important. The Survival Rights we felt were the most important, but the development rights were our favourite, because they are the right to play and have an education. Ms Claire's class.
ReplyDeleteThe development right is interesting in a way that even kids with super condition of survival right I was wondering if they also have proportionable development right :-)
